Do you remember what it was like to be a teenager at summer camp?

I do. And I wrote a book all about it. You’ll like The Quest for the Golden Plunger if you:

  • Have ever been a Boy Scout.

  • Have a brother, friend, or child who is/was a Boy Scout.

  • Have ever been in Venturing Crew, Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts, or any similar organization where teenagers must fend for themselves in the woods.

  • Have ever been to summer camp.

  • Have read Lord of the Flies and thought it sounded like part of your childhood.

  • Want to know how to make a quick buck with laxative chocolate and high quality toilet paper.

  • Need a good laugh.

 Take a look inside…

An excerpt from Chapter 4: A Ranger is Obstinate

Journey sets the trophy back down behind the table, pulling me the rest of the way out of my trance. “The rules to win the Golden Plunger are the same as they’ve always been,” he says, “but with a twist!” There is an audible, collective gasp from the camp. Journey grins. “Besides the good behavior requirement, the Alabama Troop will run the Culling this year.” A chill goes out over the crowd. “As you know, the Culling is a special event created by the troop running it. The Camp Winnebago flag has also been hidden somewhere on camp grounds. Good behavior, winning the Culling, and finding the flag will all count towards winning the Golden Plunger.”

“I found the flag!” Uncle Ruckus holds up a pair of boxers.

Everybody yells and moves toward Uncle Ruckus like it’s Black Friday in 1996 and he’s holding the last Tickle Me Elmo.

“That is not the flag!” Journey yells into the megaphone.

“Is this it?” Some kid holds up a scrap of cloth.

“No, that’s garbage, don’t—” But Journey gets cut off.

“I found the flag!”

“Here it is!”

Journey blares the alarm on the megaphone, and everybody shuts up. “You’ll know the flag when you find it!” He’s clearly losing his patience.

“Well, where is it?!”

Journey squints his eyes in disbelief. “I can’t tell you. Every day we’ll give out clues to help you find it. But, it could be hidden anywhere on camp property. And I can promise, it’s hidden really well this year. It could be in the Dining Hall, at the bottom of the lake, in the woods—”

Uncle Ruckus drops the boxers he was holding and bolts into the woods. Seeing this, about a dozen other Rangers also turn and dash into the woods to begin the hunt.

Mr. B sighs, “Go get him.” He nods at Ducky, then jerks his head towards the woods. Ducky jogs into the woods to corral Uncle Ruckus.
